lifeguard swimming suits When the Sylva Swimming Pool (then photo) opened June 1, 1937, it was the only municipally-owned pool west of Asheville. Glen Frady was the first lifeguard, and Jack Allison was in charge of the shop (concession stand) at the entrance to the pool. Bathing suits rented for 10 cents each in those days. Built during the Depression by the Works Progress Administration, the old pool was torn down in 1969 to make way for Sylva’s Roscoe Poteet Pool (now photo), which is currently managed by the Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department.
